Hauppage WinTV gets WiFi streaming for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

If we've learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it's that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so -- and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. Indeed, the software will even stream 16 and Pregnant (or whatever it is you're into these days) to your Mac computer. Sadly, all of this streaming is going down via WiFi, but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away. It will be available directly from Hauppauge for $9.95, although the company is making a free upgrade available to current owners of WinTV-HVRs. PR after the break.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone or iPad With Spirit

Spirit has to be the easiest and quickest jailbreak ever. JailbreakMe was fast, but Spirit takes it to a whole new level. I’m not really sure a Spirit tutorial or guide is necessary because it is so simple…

Before thinking about jailbreaking your iDevice with Spirit, there are a few requirements that you need to know about. Please head over to this post I wrote earlier to read the “fine prints” and make sure you know exactly what you’re doing.

I wrote this guide by jailbreaking my iPad using Spirit but the steps are exactly identical for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Steps are also identical whether you’re on a Mac or PC.

Note that Spirit is a jailbreak for every device. It will NOT unlock your iPhone.
How to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad with Spirit

Step 1: Download Spirit from our download page.

Step 2: Make sure you have at least version 9 of iTunes.

Step 3: Back up your iPhone, iTouch or iPad in iTunes, just in case something goes wrong.

Step 4: Launch Spirit.

Step 5: Click “Jailbreak”.

Step 6: Wait just a few seconds until you see this image:

Step 7: Your iPhone will reboot and you should have the Cydia icon on your springboard.

Congrats, you just jailbroke your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad using Spirit.
Errors & Troubleshooting

Windows Vista or Windows 7 users may get the error c0000005.

To avoid this error, you have to run Spirit.exe in compatibility mode. To do so:

* Right click on Spirit.exe and select Properties
* Select the compatibility tab
* Check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” box and select Windows 98 / Windows ME

iPad UI gets ported to the iPhone and iPod touch

At this particular point, 50-something days away from the earliest iPad deliveries, we doubt too many people are up in arms about the iPad's ability to act as a jumbo iPhone. On the other hand, if we told you you can take pretty much the entire iPad experience and distill it down to your iPhone OS device, well you'd probably care a lot more, wouldn't you? To get that extra 3D flavor to your UI, including the fetching iBooks shelf and other iPad-specific touches, you'll need a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch, access to the Cydia app store, and the manpower to click past the break for the full instructional video.
