A new netbook from Sony has gone from being uncovered and making its way around the Internet, to its official announcement in the last few days.

At first it seemed that Sony either hadn’t gotten around to officially announcing it just yet, or they aren’t making a big deal about it.

The Sony Vaio M series netbook, which has the model name Sony VPC-M11M1E, is a new 10.1-inch netbook, which looks pretty much identical to the Vaio W series.

Although it looks similar to the Vaio W, the new Sony Vaio M series netbook comes in at a much more attractive price point of £300 ($455). The cheaper price of course means you’re going to be getting something less than with the W. It comes with the standard and common 1024 x 768 pixel resolution LCD, and a standard keyboard, rather than a chiclet style.

The Sony Vaio M also makes use of the new Intel Atom N450 1.6GHz CPU, along with 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and a webcam.

It’s great to see a matte / non-gloss finish all over the netbook, which gives the Vaio M a professional look. Sony’s previous model was well known for having poor battery life, which of course is a bad thing for a netbook. But we hope this latest model from Sony with the new lower power consumption Intel Atom N450 processor improves in this area.

The £300 price tag seems very reasonable when you take into account that this is a Sony product. Expect to see it available in the UK in April, and hopefully the rest of the world very soon.

Update: The Saony Vaio M is now available in the US for just $379.99 from J&R and TigerDirect. (Note: J&R are incorrectly listing it as the W series)

It is also available in Germany for €349 from Amazon.de Via Netbooked
