According to Piper Jaffray analyst Chris Larsen we'll see the iPhone 5 on Sprint and T-Mobile in addition to Verizon and AT&T.
In a research study note issued today Larsen said, "While we remain uncertain regarding the next-generation iPhone's specs and features, we believe the most noteworthy change could be the device's ability to run on more networks, specifically Sprint and T-Mobile in the U.S…Our belief is that if Apple is already going through the trouble to make a device that has the ability to work on both major network technologies, why not include all the necessary spectrum bands to make one device work on all carriers."
I'd actually tend to agree. Apple has been the biggest game in town for a while, but is quickly losing ground to Android. Windows Phone 7 even claims to be doing well sales-wise. In order to stay at the top of the heap (or at least near it) Apple needs to make sure that any and everyone who wants to own an iPhone can buy one, regardless of what carrier they happen to be using. The iPhone 4 being available unlocked is a decent first step in making the phone available to everyone, now it's time to start adding more carriers.
There's also been rumors lately that the iPhone 3GS may stick around after the iPhone 5 is released, and be available as a free handset or as a prepaid model. Both options would put it in quite a few more hands.
